The word "禪" now typically refers to a type of meditation that involves absolute stillness and tranquility to achieve a state of enlightenment (1)(2). In ancient China, it carried other meanings like "worship" ("禪,祭天也。"――《說文》), "abdicate" ("帝光禪位於虞舜。"――《三國志·文帝紀》) or "inherit" ("四先生歿後,廣仲尚能禪其家學。"――全祖望《書宋史胡文定公傳後》)(3).
