"唐大曆七年（772年），九月左右，懷素返回故鄉，繞道東都洛陽南下，拜會顔真卿。顔真卿把“十二筆意”即“平謂橫、直謂縱、均謂間、密謂際”等傳授給了懷素，並告訴懷素，他二十多歲時，曾游長安，師事張旭二年，略得筆法，自以為未穩。顔真卿並為懷素作《懷素上人草書歌序》。"(1,2)
